Pałac Papieży (Palais des Papes) to budowla z XIV wieku w stylu gotyckim. W przeszłości był siedzibą papieży (od XIV do XVIII wieku). Zbudowana z białego kamienia warownia jest największą gotycką budowlą w Europie (powierzchnia 15 tys. m²). W kompleksie znajdującym się na Rocher des Doms znajduje się obok tzw. Mały Pałac (Petit Palais), zamieszkiwany niegdyś przez kardynałów.

Awinion (fr. Avignon, prowans. Avinhon) — miasto na południu Francji (w regionie Prowansja-Alpy-Lazurowe Wybrzeże, w departamencie Vaucluse), u podnóża malowniczego wapiennego wzgórza, na lewym brzegu Rodanu, przy ujściu do niego rzeki Durance. Nad miastem góruje potężny zamek papieży (Palais des Papes).

Według danych na rok 1990 gminę zamieszkiwało 86 939 osób, a gęstość zaludnienia wynosiła 1,342 osoby/km² (wśród 963 gmin regionu Prowansja-Alpy-W. Lazurowe Avignon plasuje się na 5. miejscu pod względem liczby ludności, natomiast pod względem powierzchni na miejscu 100.) Sam zespół miejski zamieszkuje ok. 155 tys. osób.

Miasto jest dużym centrum kulturalnym i turystycznym. Corocznie od 1947 roku w Awinionie odbywa się znany festiwal teatralny (Festival d'Avignon).

 The Avignon Papacy was the period from 1305 to 1377 during which seven Popes resided in Avignon (modern-day France). This arose from the conflict between the Papacy and the French crown.Following the strife between Boniface VIII and Philip IV of France, and the death after only eight months of his successor, a deadlocked conclave finally elected Clement V, a Frenchman, as pope in 1305. Clement declined to move to Rome, remaining in France, and in 1309 moved his court to the papal enclave at Avignon, where it remained for the next 68 years. A total of seven popes reigned at Avignon; all were French, and all were increasingly under the influence of the French crown. Finally in 1377 Gregory XI moved his court to Rome, officially ending the Avignon papacy.

However in 1378 the breakdown in relations between Urban VI and the cardinals gave rise to the Western Schism, and a second line of Avignon popes, though these are not now regarded as legitimate. These became irrelevant with the end of the schism in 1417, though Benedict XIII, the last Avignon pope, had not resided there since 1403.
